of armstrong's story for years, is in seattle for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: elizabeth, good morning. could it really be all about the money? sources tell abc news, the federal government is likely to join a whistle-blower lawsuit against armstrong this week, seeking to recoup millions of dollars paid to sponsor his cycling teams. it would be the costliest case against lance armstrong by far. and his biggest headache going forward. this morning, sources say the lying is over. after a decade of denials -- >> i have never doped. >> reporter: -- even lawsuits, and vicious attacks against his detractors -- >> i've never taken performance-enhancing drugs. >> reporter: -- sources tell abc news that lance armstrong now admits he really was on more than just his bike. and this morning, oprah's revealing new details about her interview. >> yes, think the entire interview was difficult. i would say he did not come clean in the manner that i expected. >> reporter: armstrong is in talks to possibly repay some of

the millions of dollars the u.s. postal service paid to sponsor his team. money the federal government is already considering suing to get back. betsy and her husband, frankie, were close armstrong friends for years before being attacked by armstrong for refusing to lie. >> i never thought that this day would come. and it's very hard what he's done. but it's not enough. he was aided and abetted. he did not do this on his own. >> reporter: even more stunning, sources say armstrong is considering finally coming clean to u.s. anti-doping authorities. even naming others involved with beating the drug tests and maintaining the myth. >> everything that's been happening in the last week is self-serving. and it's all about salvaging what's left of his brand. >> reporter: during a day that included a tearful apology to the staff of his beloved livestrong cancer foundation, a reporter found armstrong out jogging. >> he was quite relaxed. he told me he was calm and at ease and ready to speak candidly

with oprah winfrey. >> reporter: this morning, his victories, his fans, his reputation are all gone. officials say lance armstrong beat cancer only to lose his way in a ruthless game of win at all costs. so what now? armstrong flew from his home in texas to a house that he's been staying in in hawaii overnight, where he will likely watch this interview play out like the rest of us. george? >> okay, neal. thanks. let's get more on this from "usa today" columnist, and abc news sports consultant, christine brennan. christine, thanks for coming in this morning. we know from oprah, 2 1/2 hours with lance armstrong. she says he came ready. i know you've been working your sources through the night. and you have details to what he admitted to. >> that's right, george. he did admit, according to a source i talked to late last night, that he started doping in the mid-1990s, that would be precancer, before cancer, leading to the question that many of us had, did the doping actually cause the cancer? as i understand it, oprah did

not ask that particular question. >> that's a big question. we're learning more about what neal just talked about, the talks with the u.s. anti-doping agency. including in "the wall street journal," reports of a remarkable meeting between lance armstrong and the head of the agency about a month ago, in december, where it ended very angrily. lance armstrong telling the leader, you don't hold the keys to my redemption, i hold the keys to my redemption. >> right, it sounds like an immature child, really. i think, george, this is a window into the world of lance armstrong. he's distraught. he wants to compete no matter what. he should have thought of this back in june when the same u.s. anti-doping agency gave him an opportunity to come clean and be part of the solution. instead, he kept battling and fighting in a belligerent way. and now, he faces, even if he gives up all of the goods, a full debrief, as we are reporting potentially, with the u.s. anti-doping agency in the coming days and weeks, that would reduce his lifetime ban to eight years, which would take

him up to his 50th birthday. >> which means he's not likely to make a lot of money competing in triathlons. >> no, no, the triathlons and the marathons. he's done with cycling. he cannot come back in the way that other athletes like michael vick or tiger woods have. >> thanks for reporting this morning. now, josh with the other top stories. >> good morning to all of you. we're going to begin with breaking news. major turmoil this morning for america's most important ally in the fight against terrorism. tens of thousands of people in pakistan are protesting in the streets, furious at corruption in their own government. and just this morning, pakistan's highest court ordered the prime minister to be placed under arrest. this is a move critics claim is unconstitutional. security forces, meanwhile, are standing on shipping containers to block access to parliament. they're firing guns and tear gas to hold back the crowds. we'll have updates as news warrants. and now, to your money and a price spike at the supermarket. the cold snap bringing record low temps to the southwest is starting to drive up prices in the produce aisle.

people across the country are already paying more for lettuce. prices, meanwhile, for broccoli and cauliflower are likely to rise, as well. farmers from california to arizona say the unusually frigid weather has damaged their crops. and it could take ten days to determine the full impact. and a troubling sign for the economy and the financial security for millions of americans. a new report showing that more than one-quarter of american workers are dipping into their 401(k) plans to pay their bills. a major increase from just a few years ago. among workers in their 40s, in fact, that number is even higher. it stands at roughly one in three. and a scare for tennis star serena williams, this morning, chasing a ball in the first set of the australian open here. she actually will fall and stay down for several minutes. but after getting her ankle taped, she was able to bounce back and easily win a first-round match. now, a heartwarming end to what we saw at the top of the

show. a frightening scene. fans rushing the court after north carolina state pulled a big win over duke. we are going to zoom in, however. you see there, a young fan in a wheelchair at the front of the crowd. actually recording everything from his perspective. you can see him eventually pushed to the floor. he gets lost in this stampede. obviously, a terrifying moment. he's yelling for help. but that is when c.j. leslie, one of the wolf pack, comes to the rescue, picking him up, holding him for a few minutes, making sure that he's okay. and we say this a lot when we see this happen in basketball games, football games, we understand the excitement of the moment. but don't rush the court or the field because bad things can happen. >> they sure can. okay, josh, thanks for that. we're going to go to washington now, where president

obama spent most of his final first term press conference calling out republicans on their next big government showdown. it's over the debt limit. the government loses borrowing authority to pay america's bills in about a month. and jonathan karl is covering it from the white house. jon, the president was clear, it's up to congress to get this done. he's not going to negotiate. >> reporter: that's right, george. the president is on yet another collision course with congressional republicans. and on this one, both sides are insisting they just won't back down. late yesterday, the treasury department said if congress doesn't act, the u.s. government will hit the limit of how much money it can borrow as early as one month from today. >> we are not a deadbeat nation. america cannot afford another debate with this congress about whether or not they should pay the bills they've already racked up. >> reporter: president obama used the last news conference of his first term to issue an ultimatum to congressional republicans, raise the debt ceiling. but house republicans have been equally adamant they will not raise the debt ceiling unless

the president first agrees to major spending cuts. >> i think the real issue here is, we all know, is spending. >> reporter: the president insists this is not even a subject for negotiation. >> the financial well-being of the american people is not leverage to be used. the full faith and credit of the united states of america is not a bargaining chip. >> reporter: stakes are higher than they were during the new year's eve showdown over the fiscal cliff. if an agreement isn't reached, the federal government faces default on its debt and a partial shutdown. >> social security checks and veterans benefits will be delayed. we might not be able to pay our troops. >> reporter: some have suggested president obama would have better luck with the republicans if he socialized with them. the president said that probably wouldn't make much of a difference, but he wouldn't mind trying. >> most people who know me, know i'm a pretty friendly guy. and i like a good party. >> jon, the president also talked about preventing gun violence. he said that vice president biden had given him the

recommendations, likely to be made public later this week. they include actions the president could take on his own without congress. >> reporter: congressional sources who have been briefed on biden's recommendations say he presented the president with more than a dozen steps that could be taken via executive order, where the president could strengthen gun laws, improve gun safety without waiting for congress. >> the president said he didn't know how much he could pass. thanks very much. now, to the alarming surveillance video of a 5-year-old girl who was taken from her school by a mystery woman. the little girl has just been found. now, there's questions on how she could have been taken from her classroom in the first place. abc's alex marquardt has the story. >> reporter: this morning, 5-year-old nailla robinson is getting checked out at a philadelphia area hospital, after she was snatched from her school in west philadelphia on monday. seen here on this surveillance video. police report that the

5-year-old girl says it was a stranger who took her from school. she was blindfolded and walked to a house. she says a teenage girl later took her from that house and left her on the playground where she was found. just before, her mother pled with the community to help her find her daughter. >> please, don't hurt my child. i just want my baby to come home. >> reporter: police had been on the hunt for the girl after nailla's mother dropped her off at school on monday morning at 8:45. five minutes later, investigators say this woman showed up at the school, wearing a muslim head scarf and face covering. watch as she makes her way into the classroom where she told a substitute teacher she signed her out. >> there's a signature this in the book. any time you go into the school, there's a list of people who can pick a child up. she did sign a name. but it's not legible. so we're not sure who the person is. >> reporter: remarkably, the school didn't realize something was wrong. school district officials admit a serious break in procedure, saying in a statement, an adult is not allowed to go into any classrooms to check children out.

luckily, a passerby found nailla robinson outside in the cold beneath some bleachers. the police tell us there's no obvious signs of abuse. and we're told she will be okay. and right now, the police tell us there are no suspects. >> serious break in procedures, putting it mildly. >> very disturbing. >> all right, alex, thanks so much. we're going to turn to the new ads from coca-cola. under fire from critics who say soda is fueling america's obesity epidemic. the iconic american company is launching a new campaign to show they are part of the solution, not the problem. abc's jim avila has that story from washington. >> reporter: coke has famously brought us happiness. ♪ have a coke and a smile >> wow, thanks mean joe. >> reporter: and a smile. even together. ♪ i would buy the world a coke >> reporter: and of course, those dancing polar bears. but critics say, it's also brought us obesity. >> when you take in sugary calories as liquid, they're digested and metabolized much faster. and, b, they don't fill you up.

>> reporter: sugary sodas are the number one source of calories in the american diet. even small coke cans carry the equivalent of six sugar cubes. a regular-sized bottle, 14 sugar cubes. and a super big gulp, like crunching 32 cubes. >> today, we would like people to come together on something that concerns all of us -- obesity. >> reporter: now, coke has introduced a new ad campaign, claiming it's part of the obesity solution, not the major source of the problem. >> we now offer over 180 low and no-calorie choices. >> reporter: coke introduced smaller cans to cut portion size. and finances exercise programs to work off excess calories. a sports nutritionist, recommended by coca-cola, says sugary sodas are not the only problem. >> i believe strongly we will have to increase the physical activity level of our population if we want to overcome the obesity epidemic. >> reporter: coke says it is looking for the magic bullet, a sugar substitute that would make

its regular coke less sugary. and even critics say, that is on the horizon, and likely the solution everyone is looking for. george and elizabeth? >> jim, thanks very much. now, to the controversy that is brewing at a high school in massachusetts. a new principal there is under fire for filming a "terminator" parody video to introduce himself to students. he says it's all in good fun. but some parents are outraged, saying school violence is no laughing matter. hard to believe anybody has to make that point after the massacre at sandy hook elementary school. abc's john muller has the story. >> reporter: he calls himself the naumannator. >> was he sent to save us? or destroy us? >> reporter: eric naumann, the new principal of everett high school in massachusetts, imagining himself as the futuristic killing machine from the 1991 sci-fi movie "terminator 2." this is the video he made and played for his students during morning announcements last monday. images of burning playgrounds and empty classrooms.

>> mr. naumann, where are all of the students? >> they've been naumannated. >> reporter: a student posted the video to youtube. when parents saw it, some were shocked to see such ominous images, especially so soon after the newtown shooting. >> if it was a child, what would happen if it was a child? they would be suspended or reprimanded. >> reporter: overnight, the school committee met to discuss the controversy. no announcement was announced. >> it's inappropriate, especially with the question of security in schools around the country. >> everett public schools would never be the same. >> reporter: despite the frightening images, opinions among students are mixed. >> no, this wasn't, like, the right thing to show. >> i think it's just a joke. >> reporter: this morning, this wannabe terminator, might be terminated or disciplined. >> we are all doomed. >> reporter: all right. school officials met last night to discuss the controversy. but they haven't taken any action yet. principal naumann received some

we'll have an answer for you. >> it was really so poignant. >> it was. and listen to this, everybody. ♪ over the rainbow >> a moving, exclusive performance, from the children of newtown. we cannot wait to share it with you. and that is coming up. >> cannot wait to see them singing in a little while. we're going to shift gears. we have shocking moments monday in the jodi arias trial. prosecutors played tapes of the day that arias lied about her boyfriend being killed. ryan owens is covering the trial from phoenix. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. it's quite fascinating. the prosecutor is using jodi arias' own words, along with pictures they took that day, against her. he is shredding credibility. >> if i killed travis, i would beg for the death penalty. >> reporter: those words from a woman who admits she did kill

travis alexander, and now faces the death penalty. the jury that decides if jodi arias gets that sentence, appeared riveted to this interrogation video. it was taped july 2008, a month after arias repeatedliy estabbe and shot her boyfriend. >> i looked at the map. i know where i went. >> reporter: she craws them a map, to say she was nowhere near alexander's mesa, arizona, home. >> what would you show if you were there? will that change your mind? >> i wasn't there. >> reporter: at which point the detective confronts arias with what police found on this camera in alexander's washing machine. prosecutors say she tried to wash away evidence. but on its memory card, police discovered a series of photos from the day alexander died. the jury saw explicit pictures of an intimate encounter the

couple had that afternoon, including this one of arias posing on alexander's bed. followed by nearly 20 shots of alexander in the shower. prosecutors say less than a minute after snapping them, arias attacked her unsuspecting victim. the 32-year-old cried as the jury saw the last moments of alexander's life. >> jodi, this is over. this is absolutely over. you need to tell me the truth. >> listen, the truth is, i did not hurt travis. >> reporter: years after that first interrogation video, arias would finally confess, but say she killed in self-defense. her attorneys will argue to this jury that alexander abused and controlled arias. and she killed him to save her own life that day. >> the defense is going to be someone to come in and clean up the mess of her multiple stories and explain that in some kind of a narrative. >> reporter: many court

observers believe jodi arias will take the stand. she almost has to to make that self-defense claim stick. by then, the prosecutor is hoping the jury will have heard so many lies, they won't believe a word out of her mouth. george? >> hard to see what kind of story she could tell. now, we're going to turn to the mystery of what happened to millions of dollars earned by patricia cornwell. it's part of a huge lawsuit with her former money managers. she says they have been ripping her off. but they claim that, quote, cornwell was living large. and john schriffen is here with all of it. >> reporter: this is a lot of money. according to the lawsuit, patricia cornwell says she discovered something was wrong in 2009, when he net worth was around $13 million, the same as her yearly earnings for the past four years. the big question this morning, where did all that money go? this morning, best-selling fiction crime writer patricia cornwell is knee-deep in her own

real-life mystery. in a boston courtroom this week, cornwell is suing her wealth management firm, saying it took millions from her wildly popular novels. her books based on a fictional forensic investigator, kay scarpetta, have made her rich and are showing up in a film. cornwell is known for her lavish, spending habits, including this helicopter. and she talked to robin roberts about one of her favorite cars. >> i just donated my precious ferrari. >> reporter: but now cornwell says the firm burned through her cash. and she's asking for $100 million for damages, negligence and breach of contract. >> we're seeing where business managers are accused of mismanaging large sums of money for celebrities. >> reporter: meantime, the company is firing back. saying cornwell blew her own bank account. it claims that cornwell had a

$40,000 a month lease on an apartment in new york city. as well as spending $5 million of private jet service. and $11 million on properties in concord, massachusetts. >> the jury may see this as a rich person's headache they can't understand. >> reporter: in court documents, cornwell says, she struggles with bipolar disorder, and needs help managing her business affa affairs, but was taken advantage of. something the company denies. saying, the business relationship, ms. cornwell was fully in charge of it. she knew what was being done. she directed it. cornwell claims because of the stressful ordeal, she missed a book deadline for the first time in her career, costing her about $15 million. well, jurors will have a chance to hear cornwell's side of the story in her own words. elizabeth, she is expected to take the stand at some point. >> it would seem a pretty easy thing to prove, though. these kinds of records. >> just pull out the receipts. >> exactly. >> a lot of contracts that you sign. >> a lot of receipts.

the few -- is it ing or ing? >> ing. >> i got it wrong. ing is the only restaurant that uses the miracle berry. >> and dishes will change flavors. >> what is the miracle berry? >> it looks like a cranberry. but it has a little protein on it, that makes the lemons taste as sweet as lemonade. let me give you a demonstration here. >> it's safe and healthy, right? >> it's completely safe. right here, what i want you to do is take that lemon and squeeze it into your seltzer water. this is just seltzer water. throw two in there. >> i like lemon water. i can make it really sour. that's probably really sour. >> give that a sip. you know, what does it taste like? >> lemon water. i like it. but it's good. very sour. >> i need you to take this powder and put it on your

tongue. >> hold it on my tongue? >> yep. right now, that little protein in the berry is latching on to your sour taste receptors and it's going to block it. sour foods will taste sweet. you can support us with the kick-starter campaign. when you dive right back into that soda water, it's going to taste as sweet as lemonade, void of sugar. >> uh-huh. >> and typically -- and so, we're actually going to try all these other desserts after this, which use sour things to replace sugar. >> okay. here i go. okay. it does taste like lemonade. >> isn't that wild? and there's no refined sugar in it. lemons have about 7% sugar but that's natural sugar. let me show you what else we're doing here. because limes taste like oranges, we put lime juice in

the waffles. >> oranges have more sugar and therefore more calories. >> we took cherries and balsamic vinegar. that's going to taste sour. try this waffle with those cherries. and what you're going to get is all of these sour things then tasting sweet, completely void of sugar. >> mm. that's good. >> isn't that good? >> those are yummy. >> we can take it a step further. we're going to make teriyaki chicken. teriyaki chicken has a ton of calories from sugar. here, we amped it up with lemon and lime. that's going to taste sugar. >> and you cut out the sugar. >> cut it out completely. >> how many calories did you cut out, too? >> a lot here. we've cut out 96 calories. and the kicker here, chocolate ice cream. >> is there sugar in this

i'm here with amy robach. amy, you spent so much time in newtown since the shooting a month ago. tell us about how this group came together. >> this is a community, the newtown community, that is taking action and finding a way to heal. these children, an amazing group of children right here, most of them from sandy hook elementary school, they found a way to do both, through a song. we want to mention, this song is available on amazon and itunes starting this morning. something everyone can enjoy. >> and they're working with ingrid michaelson, the folk singer. where are the proceeds going to go? >> it's going to go to newtown music academy and united way of western connecticut. this is going to move everyone at home. take a look at how it all came together. at first glance, they're just any group of happy kids. playing outside, when they should be in school. but these are the children of newtown. and only a month after

unimaginable tragedy rocked their world, they are eager to help their community. >> so many of the students came. all i could see in their eyes and from what they were telling me, is how do we help? >> reporter: they made banners and created memorials. they tied ribbons. but they weren't satisfied. >> i want to be kind to the people who have lost their loved ones and help them recover from their sorrow. >> reporter: today, they have come to the home of tina weymouth and chris frantz, recording a song to make money for the kids of newtown. >> my hope is that the kids of sandy hook school have a hit record. >> reporter: singer ingrid michaelson is lending her voice. >> even if it makes these kids who have been through so much, if it brings them an afternoon of joy and excitement, then that's what i'll do. >> reporter: the kids have their own reasons to be here. >> we want to help them feel
